I’m seeing some elements of identity politics in this speech, which is a very predictable response to the demonization of those same identities by the left. It makes me uncomfortable, because as soon as you start categorizing people by their immutable characteristics it opens a can of worms that can lead to very dark places. The populism of the speech does track with nationalist themes which reinforces my discomfort, because I agree that the repeated attacks in “financial speculators” smacks of dog whistle anti-Semitism. It doesn’t have to be, but it boy is it easy to interpret it that way if you already lean towards it.
My main take: identity politics is a poison no matter who spews it. Let’s debate ideas, not which groups should be favored in society (because the answer is none of them).
