Italy's new Prime Minister
I will start by saying I know absolutely nothing about Italian politics of Government. I have zero opinions on those topics. The new PM seems to have really annoyed the folks I usually enjoy annoying myself. So I listened (read the translation while listening) to this and damn, I love it.
I don’t know if Financial Speculators is a dog whistle for Jews and I don’t want my American Politics biases making assumptions. But this is just spot on. Its worth a 2 minute listen.
I did a quick google and its easier to find antisemitic rhetoric from the Democratic Progressive Squad than from Meloni but it was a cursory search. Anyway, this is a great speech if you agree with me that Left Wing Identity Politics is a toxic pile of bullshit. If you think LatinX and the Alphabet Soup of Identities are cool things, this is a trigger warning
Loved this, thank you for sharing. Glad to see common sense exists in Europe, I have long counted them as lost causes when the EU formed.
I’m seeing some elements of identity politics in this speech, which is a very predictable response to the demonization of those same identities by the left. It makes me uncomfortable, because as soon as you start categorizing people by their immutable characteristics it opens a can of worms that can lead to very dark places. The populism of the speech does track with nationalist themes which reinforces my discomfort, because I agree that the repeated attacks in “financial speculators” smacks of dog whistle anti-Semitism. It doesn’t have to be, but it boy is it easy to interpret it that way if you already lean towards it.
My main take: identity politics is a poison no matter who spews it. Let’s debate ideas, not which groups should be favored in society (because the answer is none of them).
